Ready to hit the road in your home on wheels? Whether you’re planning your first camping trip or you’re a seasoned nomad, having the right gear makes all the difference. So here are my 33 RV must-haves!
When I bought my RV (a Newmar Bay Star) a few years ago, I was clueless as to what I really needed. And the dealer, of course, wanted to sell me all kinds of things!
So below, I’ve compiled a list of the things that are most essential for RV travel and camping.
Full-time RVers know that success lies in the details. Your electrical system needs to be reliable, and your water source must be dependable. These camping essentials will help prevent minor injuries, keep your RV running smoothly, and make every stop at the picnic table more enjoyable.
And don’t worry. This isn’t one of those dumb lists that includes things like pot holders and trash bags. If you need a website’s help to remember stuff like that, I’m not your guy, lol.
But what I do have is actual real-life stuff I’ve learned over the years since my first RV trip in 2007. So trust me when I say this is the stuff that will actually help you.
Get ready to transform your motorhome, travel trailer, pop-up camper, or fifth wheel into the ultimate travel companion.
33 RV Must-Haves
1. EMS/Surge Protector
Considered the most critical investment for RV protection, an Electrical Management System (EMS) or surge protector guards against unreliable campground power issues.
While you can spend a boatload on some systems, all you really need is a small handheld unit. You simply plug your RV’s power cord into it, and then plug the surge protector into the campground power pedestal.
It prevents power surges from spiking your RV and damaging your systems and equipment. Dive in deeper on it with my whole article on why you might need an RV surge protector. Or . . .

2. Awning Accessories
Enhance your RV’s awning functionality with accessories like LED light strips, de-flappers to prevent wind damage, and tie-downs for additional stability.
Include awning cleaning supplies and repair tape for maintenance.
Consider adding screen rooms or awning walls for additional outdoor living space. These accessories help maximize the usability of your outdoor living area while protecting your awning investment.

3. Basic Maintenance Tools
Beyond the basic tool kit, include RV-specific maintenance items like roof sealant, silicone spray for slide-out mechanisms, and specialized cleaning products.
Keep a supply of fuses, light bulbs, and other commonly needed replacement parts. Include a maintenance checklist and log to track regular service needs. These supplies help prevent small issues from becoming major problems during trips.

4. Sewer Hose Kit
Premium sewer kits like the Valterra Dominator from Amazon include clear fittings to monitor flow and rotating connectors for easy setup.
A 20-foot kit that can split into two 10-foot sections offers maximum flexibility.
Never compromise on quality here – cheap hoses lead to messy disasters. Essential features include secure fittings for both RV and campground connections and durable materials that resist punctures, leaks, and UV damage.

5. Leveling Blocks
Essential for achieving stable parking on uneven terrain. Interlocking designs allow custom height adjustments and stack securely.
Most RVers prefer heavy-duty plastic blocks over one-piece leveling ramps due to better flexibility and fewer weight restrictions. A set of 10 blocks provides adequate height options for most situations. Critical for proper appliance operation, especially refrigerators, and overall comfort.

6. Wheel Chocks
Critical safety equipment that prevents RV movement while parked. Must be placed both in front of and behind wheels, especially on sloped sites.
Rubber chocks provide a better grip than plastic versions. Size should match tire dimensions (at least 1/4 of tire height) and weight rating must accommodate your RV’s size. Tri-Lynx and MaxxHaul make reliable options recommended by experienced RVers.

7. Camping Chairs
Who wants to sit on a picnic bench after hours of driving? That’s right! No one!
Quality camping chairs should be durable, weather-resistant, and fold compactly for storage. Consider features like cup holders, side tables, and carrying bags.
Having comfortable outdoor seating encourages outdoor living and provides alternatives when campsite picnic tables aren’t available or desirable. Some RVers prefer zero-gravity chairs for maximum comfort.

8. Emergency Road Kit
Must include jumper cables, basic tools, reflectors, emergency blankets, water, non-perishable snacks, and basic repair supplies.
Include traction aids like non-clumping kitty litter for difficult terrain.
It should be easily accessible and regularly checked for expired supplies. Essential for remote travel where help might be hours away. Consider specific needs based on your travel regions and seasons.

9. First Aid Kit
Following American Red Cross recommendations, include bandages, antibiotic ointment, burn treatment, and basic medications.
Keep supplies current by checking expiration dates regularly.
Consider the specific medical needs of all travelers and pets. Store in an easily accessible location known to all travelers. It should be comprehensive enough to handle common injuries until professional help is available.

10. Spare Tire
This really only applies to pop-up campers, trailers, fifth-wheels, Class B RVs, and maybe Class C RVs. Class A motorhomes have gigantic tires with no good place to store them. And the jack needed to lift an RV of that size can be expensive.
Plus if your Class A has double rear wheels (one behind the other), that is a LOT of work to do yourself. So with a Class A RV and some Class C RVs, you’ll be better off calling a tow truck or other RV tire professional.
But for smaller RVs, both a spare tire and a high-quality RV tire compressor are essential.
11. Power Adapters (Dogbones)
Many bigger RVs simply have a 50-amp power cord coming out of them.
But what do you do if you get to a campground that is only set up for 30-amps (a different connector). Or (even worse) only 110v??
That’s where these come in. I recommend getting adapters for both 50-30 amp and 30-110v. They’re cheap, and that way you’re covered no matter what happens.

12. RV Extension Cords
Look for heavy-duty cords that are specifically rated for RV use, matching your amperage requirements.
Unlike household extension cords, these feature thicker gauge wire for safe power transmission. Weather-resistant construction protects against elements.
Length options typically range from 15 to 50 feet. Must include proper end fittings and weatherproof connections. Store properly to prevent damage to cords and connections.

13. Basic Tool Kit
Include both standard and metric wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and basic repair supplies.
Add RV-specific tools based on your unit’s requirements. Keep organized and easily accessible. Should handle basic repairs and maintenance tasks.
Include electrical testing tools and basic plumbing repair items. Regular maintenance prevents small issues from becoming major problems.

14. Flashlights/Headlamps
Multiple light sources are essential for RV living, particularly during power outages or off-grid camping.
Headlamps provide hands-free lighting for tasks.
Include backup batteries or ensure rechargeable units stay charged. LED options provide the longest battery life and brightest illumination. Keep lights in easily accessible locations throughout the RV. Critical for nighttime emergency repairs or camp setup.

15. Outdoor Rug and Doormat
A quality outdoor rug creates usable outdoor living space and helps keep dirt out of your RV.
Look for rugs designed to allow water drainage and resist mold growth. A separate heavy-duty doormat provides extra shoe cleaning before entering the RV.
The combination significantly reduces cleaning needs inside the RV. Consider multiple sizes for different campsite configurations and backup when one needs cleaning.

16. Cell Phone Signal Booster
A signal booster like the weBoost can amplify cell signals up to 32 times, enabling connectivity in remote locations.
These systems typically include an external antenna mounted on the RV roof and an internal unit. Essential for those working remotely or needing reliable communication, these devices work with all major carriers.
They can mean the difference between having usable internet and phone service or being completely disconnected when camping in more remote areas.

17. Tank Treatment Supplies
Proper chemical treatments for black and grey water tanks are essential for odor control and waste breakdown.
Include holding tank deodorizers, digester products, and tank cleaning solutions.
Consider carrying sensor cleaning products to maintain accurate tank level readings. These supplies help prevent unpleasant odors and ensure proper tank function, particularly important during longer stays or hot weather.

18. Outdoor Camping Grill
This reduces heat buildup inside RV during cooking and expands meal preparation options. Plus you can’t always count on campgrounds to have a good grill to cook on.
Choose portable models that store efficiently and just use regular propane tanks for fuel.

19. Roku Stick for Your TV(s)
Campgrounds are often old and outdated. If anything, most just offer cable TV. And let’s be honest. Most of us got rid of that years ago because we got tired of sifting through hundreds of channels and never finding anything to watch.
Plus with a Roku, you can just use the streaming channels you likely are already paying for and watch what you want, when you want it.
And if the campground doesn’t have Wi-Fi, just tether off your smartphone.

20. Refrigerator Door Strap
My refrigerator door was notorious for flying open as we drove. Then of course food containers would go flying and often create a big mess.
And bear in mind my refrigerator (a NorCold) had a built-in door lock. It just didn’t work very well and any amount of heavy items on the door shelves (bottles of water/wine, etc) would easily cause the lock to fail and the door to fly open.
I used a simple bungee cord from the far side of the door to one of the kitchen drawer handles and that worked fine.
41. Winter Weather Kit
For cold weather camping, include pipe heating cables, insulation for water hookups, and specialized RV antifreeze.
Heat tape and foam pipe covers help prevent freezing.
Consider portable electric heaters for supplemental heat. Include emergency supplies in case of power outages during cold weather. This kit becomes essential for extending the camping season into colder months.
56. Space-Saving Coffee Maker
Compact coffee solutions like the Keurig K-Mini Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker provide morning coffee without consuming precious counter space or excessive power.
This tiny thing can easily sit in a pantry, drawer, or just set it in the sink while you drive to your next destination.

60. Bathroom Organization System
Specialized organization solutions for limited RV bathroom space include over-door organizers, magnetic storage options, and shower caddies.
Consider collapsible hampers and towel storage solutions. Include humidity control products to prevent moisture-related issues. These systems help maintain order in typically tiny RV bathrooms while maximizing usable space.
24. Indoor Entertainment Items
Essential for rainy days or when outdoor activities are limited.
Include board games, cards, books, and electronic entertainment options. Choose items that store compactly and serve multiple purposes.
Consider space limitations when selecting entertainment options. Often dining tables come with drawers below the seats so that’s a perfect place to put them.
This is particularly important during extended periods of bad weather.
25. Digital Door Lock
This provides keyless entry convenience and improved security.
Features like remote controls and illuminated keypads enhance usability. Some systems include smartphone connectivity.
This eliminates the need to carry keys during activities. Allows easy access for multiple users without multiple keys.

64. Non-Slip Cabinet Liners
Quality non-slip liners prevent items from shifting in cabinets during travel.
Look for durable, washable materials that can be cut to size. Consider different textures for different applications – thicker for heavy items, thinner for papers and lightweight items.
These liners help prevent damage to stored items and reduce travel noise from shifting contents.

27. Portable Speaker
These enhance outdoor and indoor entertainment. Choose waterproof Bluetooth models with a long battery life like the JBL Charge series.
This one is small but sounds great. Lots of color choices and easy USB recharging (with a 20-hour battery life). Get 2 of them and pair them for true stereo sound.

28. Backup Camera
High-end Class A RVs often come with this. But if your RV doesn’t, it’s a surprisingly small investment and a simple installation process. And it significantly improves the safety and ease of parking.
Many newer RVs come pre-wired for installation. They provide clear rear views for backing and monitoring towed items. Some systems offer multiple camera angles and night vision. Essential for preventing accidents and reducing parking stress.

29. Tire Air Compressor
This is essential for maintaining proper tire pressure across multiple tires.
Must handle RV tire pressure requirements. Include appropriate attachments for both RV and tow vehicle tires.
Enables pressure adjustments without finding truck stops. Regular tire pressure maintenance extends tire life and improves fuel efficiency.

68. LP Gas Detector
A reliable LP gas detector is crucial for safety in any RV with propane appliances.
Consider models with both audible and visual alarms. Some units combine LP detection with carbon monoxide monitoring.
Regular testing and battery replacement ensure proper function. This safety equipment is essential for preventing dangerous gas accumulation in the confined space of an RV.
The one I like is from Kidde and just plugs into any RV outlet but also operates off a 9-volt battery for when shore/generator power isn’t an option (or in the event of a power failure).

31. Solar Kit
Portable solar kits, particularly the Renogy 200 Watts 12 Volts Monocrystalline RV Solar Panel Kit provide power for basic 12-volt systems during boondocking.
Many new RVs come pre-wired for installation. Powers essential systems like lights, water pumps, and propane heaters.
Enables extended off-grid stays when combined with proper battery storage. Consider power requirements when selecting system size.

32. Portable Power Station
This provides reliable backup power for essential devices such as cell phones.
Multiple charging options including AC, USB, and DC outputs. These can be recharged via solar panels, or shore power/generator.
They are essential for charging devices while boondocking. Provides backup power during unexpected outages. Choose capacity based on power needs.
I love the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 Portable Power Station which has standard outlets as well as USB ports. And it recharges in about 1 hour when needed.

33. Sewer Support System
A proper sewer hose support system helps maintain an appropriate slope for waste drainage. These supports prevent low spots in sewer hoses that can trap waste and cause backups.
Look for collapsible options that store compactly. The support system should be adjustable for different terrains and distances to the sewer connection. This equipment is essential for proper waste management and preventing messy situations.

Final Thoughts
Equipping your RV with these essential items will make every camping adventure more enjoyable. From a reliable water pressure regulator to a trusty fire extinguisher, each item serves an important purpose in your home away from home.
New RVers often learn through trial and error, but these RV accessories can help smooth the learning curve. Keep duct tape handy for quick fixes, and don’t forget personal items that make your RV mattress feel just like home. An outdoor grill and pressure cooker add wonderful cooking options.
Remember, RV camping is about being prepared while embracing spontaneity.
Pack these camper essentials, plus kitchen essentials and bug spray, and you’ll be ready for anything the open road throws your way.
Your clean water will flow, your space heater will warm chilly nights, and your walkie-talkies will keep everyone connected.
Happy camping, and may these items enhance every moment of your RV experience!
